Course

Our course is based on the National Standard Curriculum from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). DOT-NHTSA has the responsibility to develop training courses that are responsive to guidelines established by the Highway Safety Act of 1966. In 1978, NHTSA developed the: Training Program for Operation of Emergency Vehicles: A National Standard Curriculum (EVOC). The 1978 edition of the EVOC course has been revised to the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (Ambulance): National Standard Curriculum, to ensure that it is accurate, current, and that it incorporates adult learning strategies. The National Standard Curriculum has been further revised by AMR specifically for our employees to address both emergency, and non-emergency operation of our ambulances.

Our revised curriculum is appropriate for all of our operations, and is mandatory training for all AMR employees who operate an ambulance. EVOC curriculum is comprised of 3 modules. Module A includes 8 hours of didactic classroom instruction, followed by a written examination. Module B provides 8 hours of hands on instruction as participants practice ambulance operator skills on a closed course driving range. Module B is graded on a pass/fail basis. Module C allows our Field Training Officers to assess the driving performance of our new employees during our daily operations.
